Remote access

Access to our digital media (databases, e-books and journal full texts) is possible from campus for most providers without further login. For a few products, registration with the university email/university ID via Shibboleth is also required on campus.

Members of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences also have the option of using the media licensed by the library outside the university network. Only a few resources are excluded from remote access for licensing reasons. There are basically two access options. You can access most publishers via Shibboleth. If the provider does not support Shibboleth, please use access via a proxy server or the specific authentication type.

Via authentication service Shibboleth/institutional access

An increasing number of our services can be accessed via Shibboleth. This authentication procedure enables access to licensed digital information resources from outside the campus network with your personal h_da login and without additional software. The aim of Shibboleth is to be able to use as many web-based applications as possible with just one user ID and only have to log in once (so-called "single sign-on procedure"). The terms "Institutional", "Shibboleth" in the login context of a provider indicate that Shibboleth functionality is available.

This is how you can log in to a provider site via Shibboleth:

1. select Shibboleth funding organization: "German Higher Education and Research" or "DFN/AAI"
2. select institution "Hochschule Darmstadt"
3. Shibboleth login page of h_da appears
4. enter h_da user ID and password of h_da account

Data protection and data security

The transmission of data to other organizations is subject to data protection if personal data is involved. The Shibboleth procedure makes it possible to handle personal data particularly sparingly. In particular, your password is not transmitted to the service provider. The password is checked on the servers of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.

Logout

Shibboleth does not currently allow a single logout. If you use shibboleth-secured services from public PCs - for example Internet cafes - please note the following information. Delete your private data (cookies) and thus your Shibboleth session key in the browser.

  • In Firefox, go to "History": Delete recent history: select all items and delete now.
  • In Internet Explorer, go to Tools: Delete browsing history: Delete all

Via ProxyServer/h_da VPN

Alternatively, access is possible via a university proxy server. This directs the website requests so that they appear to come from the campus. You must enter the proxy in the browser you use for remote access. You will need an encrypted password for this. This is generated from your h_da password, so it may change if you change your h_da password.

Students can obtain the password at https://stud.h-da.de/aktivieren -> Change personal data and employees at https://sd.h-da.de -> Data maintenance -> Password for the library proxy.

The proxy server must be entered for all protocols with proxy.stud.h-da.de (students) or proxy.ma.h-da.de (employees) with port 3128.

For some browsers there are corresponding add-ons that allow the proxy configuration to be conveniently switched on and off, e.g. Firefox Toggle Proxy or Chrome Proxy SwitchyOmega.

Special features for remote access by individual providers

Home access (for h_da students and staff) to the Beck-Online database is via a two-factor authentication procedure. To do this, you must set up a Beck-Online account yourself and link it to a special authentication app on your smartphone.

Important: The first-time registration for two-factor authentication is only possible from the campus in the WLAN of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences!

  • Only your university address can be entered as the e-mail address (...@stud.h-da.de or ...@h-da.de).
  • Use the instructions for home access (only visible on campus) from Beck-Online.
    (instructions as pdf)
  • Download a compatible app for 2FA from the common stores according to the operating system (iOS, Android, Windows) directly via your smartphone.
  • 2FA is also possible with a laptop, provided it works with the Windows10 operating system. To do this, download the "Authenticator for Windows" app from the Microsoft Store and follow the instructions provided by Beck-Verlag.

Cookies must be accepted by your browser in order to use Beck-Online. For security reasons, your personal profile in Beck-Online is only linked to a single cookie, i.e. if you delete this cookie or use a different browser or device, the access authorization from Beck-Online will be transferred to the new cookie. Such a transfer is only possible three times, after which your Beck-Online account will be blocked.

If you have technical problems with setting up Beck-Online home access, please contact Beck-Online directly : +49 (89) 38189-421 or hotline@beck.de
